The Big Food Project Marks Volunteers’ Week 2025
Volunteers’ Week returns this year after celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024. From 2 to 8 June 2025, we will join thousands of charities and voluntary organisations across the UK in recognising the extraordinary contribution volunteers make in their communities.
Running every year since 1984, Volunteers’ Week provides a crucial opportunity to thank volunteers and recognise the value of their time, passion, and skills. The campaign celebrates the diversity and unity of volunteer efforts, highlighting how this work enriches communities across the UK.
This year, we will be celebrating the dedication of our 150 volunteers -individuals who give their time each week to help reduce food waste and tackle food insecurity in our local area. From collecting surplus food to distributing meals to 120+ charities and organisations, the efforts of these volunteers make a real and lasting difference.
Volunteer Manager, Donna said:
“Volunteers’ Week is a chance to celebrate and recognise the fantastic contribution our volunteers make. Thanks to them, the local community has benefited from thousands of meals saved from waste and redistributed to people who need them most. Their kindness, energy, and commitment have helped reduce hunger and bring people together around food. We simply couldn’t do it without them.”
Volunteers’ Week is led by the UK Volunteering Forum – a partnership between Volunteer Scotland, the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), and Volunteer Now in Northern Ireland.
The UK Volunteering Forum said:
“Volunteers bring a richness to organisations across the country. There is no better time to recognise the diversity of our volunteers and celebrate the difference that volunteering makes than during Volunteers’ Week. Without volunteers, many charities simply could not function – with so many people giving up their time and going above and beyond. The week is a chance for all of us to show just how vital they are to charities and communities everywhere.”
As we join the nationwide celebration, we encourage everyone to take a moment to thank a volunteer, share their story, or consider how they too can make a difference.
