Our Services
At The Big Food Project, our goal is to tackle food insecurity, reduce food waste, and support families across Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre. Through a network of dedicated services, we provide essential food support, promote community resilience, and work towards a hunger-free future. Each of our services play a unique role in this mission, addressing the distinct needs of our communities and the challenges we face together. Explore how our initiatives are making a difference and discover ways you can get involved.
1) Food Crisis Support
Supporting Communities Since 2012
Food crisis support provides immediate assistance to individuals and communities facing emergency situations, such as economic hardship. This support aims to address urgent food needs by providing essential resources like food parcels to those who are most vulnerable. It focuses on offering quick relief to ensure that people have access to the nutrition they need to survive during critical times. By responding promptly and effectively, food crisis support plays a vital role in reducing hunger and alleviating the strain on affected populations, helping them recover and rebuild their lives.
2) Frontline Partner Distribution
Frontline partner distribution involves collaborating with over 120 local charities and organisations to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. By working closely with trusted community partners, this approach enables the efficient delivery of essential resources to vulnerable populations. Local charities have valuable knowledge of the community’s specific needs, allowing for targeted and effective distribution of food, supplies, and support. This collaborative effort strengthens the response to crises and ensures that help is delivered in a timely manner, directly benefiting individuals and families who are facing difficult circumstances.

”We collaborated with The Big Food Project to create healthy Christmas recipe boxes for our Holiday Activities, and Food (HAF) Programme, ensuring that some of our town's families in need received support during the Christmas holidays - a time that can be especially challenging for many.
Annie Tyas, Public Health Programme Manager - Blackpool Council
The team were efficient and professional, guiding us from the initial discussions about our needs to sourcing the ingredients, designing the recipe cards, and managing the final delivery - they kept us informed and involved at every step.
The outcome was a selection of delicious, budget-friendly energy-boosting recipes, complete with all the ingredients for a fun, family-oriented cooking activity.
3) The Big Food Truck
Saving pounds and pence, saving the planet
The Big Food Truck is our innovative mobile programme that brings surplus food to families and individuals in need, helping them access essentials at a fraction of standard prices. As the cost of living continues to rise, we know that many households are finding it harder to afford basic groceries. The Big Food Truck provides a solution by offering low-cost, quality food sourced from surplus stock donated by local suppliers.
Our service currently operates across Blackpool, serving various host venues. Through partnerships with suppliers, we rescue surplus food and redistribute it to families based on household needs, offering a range of bag sizes—from individual portions to large family bundles. It’s a flexible, accessible way to stretch every pound while reducing food waste.
Where does our food come from?
Rescuing surplus food that would ordinarily go to waste
Food surplus happens when the amount of available food exceeds demand, often due to overproduction, cosmetic imperfections, or approaching best-before dates. In the UK, food waste is an ongoing concern, with approximately 9.5 million tonnes of food being discarded annually—a staggering amount, especially when millions face food poverty. The Big Food Project is committed to intercepting this surplus, ensuring that good, nutritious food doesn’t end up in landfills, where it would release harmful methane emissions.
Our work with surplus food is central to The Big Food Project. Through partnerships with suppliers and retailers, we collect surplus food that is still perfectly safe and nutritious. This rescued food is then distributed to those in need, offering a reliable source of food to local families and reducing the impact of waste on our environment.
By redirecting food surplus to those in need, we aim to create a sustainable food system that benefits both our community and the environment. Every item saved from landfill is a meal on the table for someone in need and a step toward a healthier planet.
