Our story

Turning surplus into sustenance: The Big Food Project’s journey

It all started around a humble kitchen table, where a group of friends gathered with a shared idea to make a difference in the lives of those in need. What began as a simple vision quickly grew into something much bigger.

The Big Food Project began as a small initiative at Blackpool Food Bank in 2012, driven by a simple yet powerful goal: to ensure no one in Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre goes hungry. Over time, that goal has expanded, and so has our reach. Today, The Big Food Project is a collaborative effort, bringing together over 120 local organisations all dedicated to addressing food insecurity in our area.

Our story is one of community collaboration and resilience. Each year, an astonishing £14 billion worth of food is wasted in the UK, yet thousands of families face the stark reality of hunger. In Lancashire alone, just 1% of food wasted could provide meals for 98,000 people. At The Big Food Project, we work tirelessly to change that, redirecting surplus, edible food from local food manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, and individuals to those who need it most.

We believe in the power of community, and our work has ripple effects beyond providing immediate relief. By creating a resilient, community-driven food system, we aim to ensure a stable, reliable source of support that withstands disruptions and reaches those most vulnerable.

Making a difference in Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre

At The Big Food Project, we’re committed to creating real, measurable change in our community. From redistributing surplus food to supporting families facing hardship, our efforts are aimed at tackling food poverty head-on. Here’s how we’re making an impact every day:

Tackling food poverty with local solutions

Food poverty is a pressing issue across the UK, with millions of families struggling to put meals on the table. In our region alone, the need has been steadily increasing.

Through our network of over 120 local food banks, community organisations, and generous partners, The Big Food Project is working to bridge the gap between waste and want—ensuring that food reaches those who need it most.

I do struggle with my mental health. But, when I come here, it changes my life. [It’s] so friendly and, I mean, I enjoy it...just gets me through the day. I think a lot of people would struggle [without this service]. It’s important for people to come here and get food. I’ve got a lot of bills that I pay out. By the time I’ve done that, I’ve hardly got anything left. So, that’s why I come here.”
