From Remembrance to Movement

5 in 5 at 50 is the next chapter of Ron’s Run — a community initiative founded by Luke in memory of his dad, Ron Helmn.

Ron went to war at just 15 years old and served 27 years in the RAF. Later in life, he dedicated himself to coaching thousands of children at Stanley Park Athletics Track — even while living with cancer for a decade.

After Ron passed away, Luke organised Ron’s Run to fund a commemorative bench. When the bench was generously donated, he made a decision: keep running — but for something bigger.

Instead of raising money for a bench, Ron’s Run began collecting food donations for local families.

What began as remembrance became action.

Inspired by the courage and endurance shown in major fundraising challenges — including those led by Sara Cox and Kevin Sinfield — Luke decided it was time to think bigger again.

And so, 5 in 5 at 50 was born.

Why This Matters

The BIG Food Project rescues hundreds of tonnes of surplus food each year.

But even after supermarket and supplier donations, there remains a shortfall of:

100,000 meals every year
Around £50,000.

That’s 100,000 times someone worries about food. 100,000 meals that still need funding.

Ron served his country at 15.

Today, in his hometown, families are still going hungry.

That cannot be right.

Every £1 donated helps provide the equivalent of two meals.

Our Goal

This is about more than miles. It’s about honouring service, paying sport forward, and standing together as a town. Five days of running. One shared goal: 100,000 meals.

Every mile run helps turn effort into impact. Let’s turn miles into meals. Let’s feed our town.

What your support achieves: £10 provides around 20 meals, £50 helps fund 100 meals, and £500 helps provide 1,000 meals for people across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

Your donation doesn’t just fund food. It helps cover the collection, storage and distribution of rescued surplus food — keeping good food on plates and out of landfill across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
